An Analysis of Acronym Formation in Linguistic Studies and Its Application in Modern Arabic
Abstract
The rapid advancement of science, technology, and digitalization has contributed to the emergence of new terminologies and linguistic phenomena. One of the most distinctive linguistic processes in Arabic is acronym formation (anḥāt), which has been widely studied in the field of Arabic linguistics. This study aims to analyze the formation, classification, and application of acronyms in modern Arabic by examining both classical and contemporary linguistic sources. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this research investigates the linguistic principles governing acronym formation in Arabic, drawing from traditional works such as Al-Ṣāḥibī fī Fiqh al-Lugha by Ibn Fāris and Al-Muzhir by Al-Suyūṭī, as well as modern linguistic studies. The findings reveal that acronym formation in Arabic follows specific phonological and morphological patterns, with four primary types: verbal, nominal, attributive, and relative acronyms. Additionally, the study highlights the increasing use of acronyms in scientific, technological, and media discourse, reflecting the evolving nature of the Arabic language. The study concludes that acronym formation serves as a mechanism for linguistic economy and efficiency, facilitating the integration of new terminologies while preserving Arabic’s morphological integrity. Further research is recommended to explore the sociolinguistic impact of acronyms and their role in modern Arabic standardization.
