Author Guidelines

Ad-sawl: Journal of Islamic Studies invites authors to submit high-quality, original research that contributes to the field of Islamic studies. To ensure a smooth submission and publication process, authors are encouraged to follow the guidelines outlined below:

1. Manuscript Types

We accept the following types of manuscripts for consideration:

  • Research Articles: Original research contributing new insights to the field.
  • Review Articles: Comprehensive reviews of recent developments in Islamic studies.
  • Case Studies: In-depth analyses of specific topics or cases related to Islamic law, history, or culture.
  • Short Communications: Brief reports of original research or new findings.
  • Book Reviews: Critical reviews of recent books related to Islamic studies.

2. Submission Requirements

  • Originality: Manuscripts must be original and have not been published or submitted elsewhere. Authors must ensure that the manuscript is free from plagiarism and properly cites all sources.
  • Language: All manuscripts should be submitted in English. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to seek language editing assistance prior to submission.
  • Formatting:
    • Manuscripts should be typed in 11-point Times New Roman font with 1.5 line spacing.
    • The manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format.
    • Margins should be 1 inch (2.5 cm) on all sides.
    • Pages should be numbered consecutively.
    • Please use headings and subheadings to structure your manuscript clearly.

3. Manuscript Structure

Manuscripts should generally follow the structure outlined below:

  1. Title: A concise and informative title. Avoid abbreviations or jargon.
  2. Abstract: A brief (150-250 words) summary of the manuscript, outlining the research objectives, methodology, results, and conclusion.
  3. Keywords: Provide 3-5 keywords that reflect the main topics of your research.
  4. Introduction:
    • A clear introduction that sets the context of your study, its objectives, and significance.
    • A brief review of relevant literature, demonstrating the research gap your study addresses.
  1. Research Method:
    • Describe the research design, approach, and methods used.
    • Provide sufficient detail for others to replicate the study if needed.
  2. Results and Discussion:
    • Present your findings in a clear, logical manner.
    • Discuss the implications of the results and how they contribute to the field of Islamic studies.
  3. Conclusion:
    • Summarize the key findings of the study and suggest areas for future research.
  4. Bibliography:
    • Follow the Chichago Manual of Stye for both in-text citations and the reference list.
    • All sources cited in the manuscript must be listed in the reference section, and vice versa.
    • Make sure to cite all relevant sources, including books, journal articles, and other scholarly works.

4. Figures and Tables

  • Each figure/table should have a clear title and numbered consecutively (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1).
  • Ensure that figures are of high quality and legible. For graphs and charts, use simple and clear visuals.
  • All figures and tables should be referred to in the main text.

5. Ethical Considerations

  • Authors are required to disclose any conflicts of interest related to their research. This includes any financial, personal, or professional relationships that may influence the study.
  • Authors must ensure that their research complies with ethical standards, especially in the case of studies involving human subjects. Ethical approval from a relevant institution must be provided where applicable.
  • Manuscripts that include sensitive data, such as personal or confidential information, should ensure that consent has been obtained and confidentiality maintained.

6. Submission Process

  • Authors must submit their manuscript via the journal's online submission system.
  • Before submission, authors should ensure that their manuscript follows the journal's formatting and structure guidelines.
  • Submissions must include:
    • The manuscript itself.
    • A cover letter that includes the manuscript's title, a brief description of its contribution to the field, and confirmation that the manuscript is original and has not been submitted elsewhere.
    • A Conflict of Interest statement, if applicable.
    • Ethical approval statement (if applicable).

7. Peer Review Process

  • All submitted manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review process. The identities of both authors and reviewers are kept confidential during the review process.
  • Authors will be notified of the editorial decision, which may include requests for revisions or acceptance/rejection.
  • If revisions are requested, authors must address the reviewers’ comments and resubmit the manuscript within the given timeline.

8. Publication Charges

  • Article Processing Charge (APC): Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, authors will be required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). Please refer to the Author Fees section for details on the APC.
  • Waivers: In cases of financial hardship, authors may request a waiver or discount on the APC. These requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

9. Copyright

  • By submitting a manuscript to Ad-dawl, authors agree to transfer the copyright of the accepted article to the journal upon publication. Authors retain the right to use the article for personal or academic purposes, with proper citation.

10. Plagiarism and Academic Integrity

  • All manuscripts will be screened for plagiarism using reliable plagiarism detection tools.
  • Any manuscript found to contain plagiarized content will be immediately rejected, and the authors will be informed of the decision.

11. Revisions

  • Authors are expected to make revisions based on the feedback provided by the reviewers. Revised manuscripts must be submitted within the given timeframe. If authors do not submit revisions within the specified time, the manuscript may be rejected.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
 

Copyright Notice

  1. By submitting an article to Ad-dawl: Journal of Islamic Studies, authors agree to the following terms regarding copyright:

    1. Copyright Transfer:
      Upon acceptance of an article for publication, the copyright of the article will be transferred to Ad-dawl: Journal of Islamic Studies. This transfer allows the journal to publish and distribute the article globally, both in print and online, and to manage the article in accordance with the journal’s policies.

    2. Author Rights:
      Authors retain the right to:

      • Use the article for personal or academic purposes, including presentation at conferences or inclusion in institutional repositories, with proper citation of the original publication in Ad-dawl.
      • Share the article with colleagues or for non-commercial educational purposes.
    3. Open Access:
      Ad-dawl is an open-access journal, meaning that all articles are freely available to the public, ensuring the wide dissemination of scholarly work. Articles published in the journal will be available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license, allowing others to share, distribute, and build upon the work, provided the original author(s) are credited.

    4. Reuse of Content:
      Authors may reuse their published work in future publications, dissertations, and other scholarly works. However, proper citation must be given to the original publication in Ad-dawl.

    5. Permissions for Third-Party Content:
      Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions for any third-party content (e.g., figures, tables, or images) included in their manuscript. The journal is not liable for any issues related to copyright infringement in such content.

    6. Journal’s Rights:
      The journal reserves the right to make necessary edits to the article for formatting, clarity, and length. The final version of the manuscript published in Ad-dawl will be the version of record.

    By submitting your manuscript, you confirm that:

    • The article is your original work, and you hold the rights to the content.
    • All co-authors (if any) have agreed to the manuscript’s submission, its contents, and the transfer of copyright.
